Unhappy how they make ends meets??

Hi.. i have just created my new linux kernel with the appropriate set of modules in the initrd file.. I have noticed that the initrd contains the necessary modules to boot my system....

I am really intrested in learning how suse, mandrake, fedora e.t.c create initrd images that work for all kind of pcs.. What they do and what modules they include for making different pcs from different hardware to work fine.. I say that because one pc needs modules for the sata drive.. or the sound card or the network card... How the linux gurus implement initrd images for such situations?
Thx a lot

They choose enough modules to use the hard drive. For example, ide, scsi, and sata modules on the initrd would be enough for most systems. As for sound and network, they just enable almost everything else as a module and leave that on the hd to be loaded later.
