How slackware autodetect system hardware?

when i install a linux distro, slackware 9.1 for example, all my devices works fine automatically.

In slackware 9.1, i usually install ibare 2.4.22 kernel (provided in cdrom) which has embebed code for general purpose use, but all other devices not supported in kernel core are installed too like modules.

Magically, without intervention, all my devices are configurated sucessfully but /etc/modules.conf and /etc/modprobe.conf are empty.

Now, here is the problem...

When i upgrade kernel from 2.4.22 to 2.6.3, all devices compiled like modules doesn't load automatically. I always can use modprobe command to load any modules, but that is not the question.

The question is:

How with kernel 2.4.2 and those files empty loads correct device modules and with kernel 2.6.3 doesn't load none?

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
