how many using Firefox/Thunderbird on Linux
 

I currently use Firefox and Thunderbird on Windows. What experiences have the people had using Firefox and Thunderbird on Linux and what problems have you had? Also, what limitations have you found using them on Linux?

Thanks. I am thinking of switching to Linux and want to make sure I won't lose the FF and TB I already use when I do.

I've used and use (though Epiphany has some advantages over Firefox, and Evolution over Thunderbird, but also vice versa..I think FF and TB are still a bit better. for now.), and I've got nothing to complain..maybe that FF seems to have some problems with certain java things (or is it bad coding? works on some systems, but not on mine..some fujitsu web page crashed firefox when trying to load some page with java in it..but as I said, it works on _some_ systems). thunderbird is great. and both of them work better in linux than in windows - in firefox I don't seem to be able to switch the tabs as easily as in linux with keyboard etc..some small thingies, might be my ignorance, but I've used to some things and that's it.

All in all, you've got nothing to be afraid of. FF and TB work well in linux, at least as well as in windows, and if you like them on windows, you'll love them in linux. Limitations..hmm..well firefox doesn't seem to get the plugins correctly as it should, automatically. They often need to be installed somewhat manually..but that's a really small problem.

I use both. In fact, I share an inbox over Samba with my wife's XP machine that runs TB too. My only problem is that I use Debian Sarge, which is really stable. So I'm using like TB 1.0.2 or something like that and FF 1.0.4. But if you use a newer distro or debian testing/unstable, you'll have newer packages.

You might run into some issues installing things like Flash, Shockwave, etc. I don't know about this. I don't use these things so I'm just speculating. My speculation would be that you may have to do a bit more manual installation and configuration, as opposed to Window's "Click here to install this plugin".

I mainly use Konqueror every now and then I will get a website like my online banking that doesn't like it. Then I use Firefox. I use to use thunderbird but always liked the look of kmail so that is my first choice for an email client.I like how mozilla ported both firefox and thunderbird to windows however. It has brought alot more attention to the world of gnu/linux. Now everyone is supporting linux more.Yahoo and AOL made instant messengers for linux Real ported there player to linux now they just gotta port rhapsody to linux.They say they never will because linux won't allow the riaa to spy on you like in windows.But then again they'll learn that by not supporting other OS's your just asking people to steal it.As far as problems/limitations with either firefox/thunderbird none here.

no known differences with thunderbird

extremely minor differences with ff:

1. as mentioned above, some plugins require more than just a mouse-click or two to install (and, really, isn't this a 'good' thing?)

2. sometimes, with certain boards, the 'if your browser doesn't automatically forward you, click here' line has to be clicked, because the browser doesn't automagically.....

i use firefox on RH EL, FC 4, and Gentoo. No major issues, although there some load time issues with Firefox on FC 4, but I suppose I could reinstall it and get rid of the 20 or so extensions I don't use anymore. Needless to say, disabling or uninstalling extensions you don't use is key to load (start up) times.
