I use my computer desktop like my real desktop. when I sit down its nice and clean but while im working on stuff, that stuff is sitting there on my desktop until im done with it then i file it away. If im not done with what I was working on then it will stay there on my desktop until I am done, a lot of times I create shortcuts to places I'm using files at on my desktop for quick easy access until I'm done working on that situation or project. So yes I use icons on my desktop and the amount varies greatly depending on what Im doing. but I do find it a great way to make life easier on myself and keep track of what im doing. Everysince I started doing it this way I have noticed a decrease in the amount of sticky notes that are stuck to my monitor!
I took advantage of an option in KDE's Desktop control panel module and turned icons off, so I only have a nice clean xplanet background. My most frequently used programs are in the kicker panel. I can run my programs using middle-mouse to bring up the K menu, or using hotkeys like Ctrl-Shift-M for KMail, or using Alt-F2 or a Konsole to type a command to start them. It speeds things up quite a bit.
desktop icons... no point. Most window managers allow for you to right-click or middle-click on the desk-top to retrieve a list of many of your install applications, which you can edit to update and it is sometimes update automatically by the window manager.
Like I said to my girlfriend, if you've got nice icons, why not flaunt them! As a long time Win95/98 user (sufferer), I was frustrated as there ain't a whole lot goin' on in the eye-candy department with that OS.
No icons here. I didn't use them in Windows either, I just threw my bread and butter apps into the quick launch and the rest on the start menu.
Now with Fluxbox, I just right click 'menu' or launch from a terminal. I just never liked the cluttered look a bunch of desktop icons make. I am an eye candy person, but I like it clean.
In KDE, I have a couple of icons that I use. Don't really need them, but they are there to use. When I am in blackbox or fluxbox, then no, there are no icons, so I don't use them.
