How many actually use desktop Icons?

i mean really take advantage of dekstop icons. i just have home, Windows and Trash on my desktop. For quick click i got everything on my gnome panel. I noticed alot when newbs use fluxbox, blackbox or xfce they ask about desktop icons, but yeah it looks nice, but is it REALLY a neccessity?

Part of having a personal computer is the fun of making it the way you want, whether something is necessary or not is basically a matter of opinion, IMHO. I find that I usually change off now and then by seeing what I use the most and then I put those programs on my taskbar and leave others on my desktop as icons for easy accessibility. Some would say that having no desktop icons or minimal icons is bland/plain/boring while you seem to think the opposite. I don't think there is any right answer, it just all comes down to personal opinion.

No icons here. They just make it look messy and no reason when I can just launch the program from a terminal window..

If I have a panel running though, I'll usually make some links there.

Fluxbox. No icons on my desktop. I do have an applauncher on gkrellm and a menu, of course, but use the keys I put in ~/.fluxbox/keys more often than not.

I agree with rberry88, I think he has the best answer.
My opinion, I use minimal icons when in kde or gnome, but do like trickykid in my
other environments. If I have Icons I feel like more than 4 makes the desktop look crowded.

/me is puzzled
How can there be a BEST answer to a
HOW MANY question?

Anyway, I use fluxbox, thus no icons. And no,
I don't miss them :) I have many things in my
menu, and use quickrun, bound to Alt-F2,
for other programs :}

Cheers,
Tink

I need icons.
I'm not that patient to start an application from the terminal, even from the menu. Well gnome or KDE panel maybe a solution coz it's one click but it's not enough space for me.
The way I configure my desktop www.moeminhtun.com/mygeneral/mydesktop.png , I have no more place to add an item on the bottom panel. I don't want to add on top and i don't want to add new extra panel.
And one more advantage of the icons over panel is that they can group together. You can see that I group my programming related stuffs on the right.

And for me, icons are not ugly or messy and they beautify the desktop.
So in conclusion,
Yeah! I like icons.

there is no answer to the main question of how many actually use desktop icons. the second one which is not the topic, is a matter of opinion. obviously there is no right or wrong answer, i just wanted to know who uses it and whether they think its a necessity for the computing experience.

just answer the question dont get all touchy.

whose all touchy? questions where asked, people gave answers and opinions. Your first question you said there was no answer for was the most answered btw.
Anyway, to satisfy
1. yes and no. In gnome and kde desktop icons are easier than trying to fumble through the menu.
fluxbox and other minimal desktops that have right click menu's, no!
2. My opinion on your second question is ya, to the "newbs" that you are suggesting are asking about desktop icons, they are a neccessity. To more experienced users probably not.

Maybe re-read the replies and then re-read your reply and see if maybe you are getting a little touchy yourself?

I just don't think you can label someone as a newbie just because the like to use icons over other methods of starting programs. I think using desktop icons give you the means to easily access your favorite programs while at the same time creating a nice pleasant looking workspace. I like having cool "eye-candy" for some of the programs I refer to as cool like XMMS, Opera, Tux Racer etc and at the same time I find alot of the icons that I use for the various programs help to personalize my desktop and isn't that what the whole idea of personal computers are for, making them how you want them? If someone prefers to have a blank screen or just wallpaper and run their programs by typing in the name from a command line then I say all the power to you but I don't think it classifies a users level of experience.

Just my 2 cents.
