how long can you plug in your usb memory stick?

I plugged in my memory stick in my pc for almost 5 hours and was using my editing program on the files inside it. Somehow the editing speed seemed to get slow after a few hours. Then I plugged out the usb stick and plugged it back in. The editing process speed seemed to be normal after that. Is there any bad consequences for plugging in a usb memory stick to your pc for too long like the memory stick overheating or something?

Have not seen this issues except on Windows, because windows uses the flash drive as memory.

I have used them for days and days downloading well, stuff.

As to the slowing that may be some problem with memory leaks or possibly some space issue on the flash in respect to automatic backups maybe.

My persistent Linux USB Flash drive installs run all day sometimes with no diminish in speed. Whether doing work or downloading or browsing or writing emails. No overheating issue either.

Each USB device you plug in contribute to the drain on the PC's power supply. That could be a factor.
