How Linux manages system imagelist?

Hi all

I just want to know how Linux manages System imagelist while we open "File Browser"? Say all .cpp, .h, .png etc etc.. files have different icons (Large and small).
Actually I want to build a restricted file browser in my software and I am using lstat() for file status. Now I want to show all files after a search, in a List View control with proper system small icons. How do I get these small icons? also how this been Theme indipendent?

Thanx in Advance

Amit

Um.. the operating system itself doesn't do this for you. Your application has to provide the icons and display them.
