How exactly do you use Wine to run an MS program like WORDPAD?

Apparently Linux has NO editor that handles objects (images) well, like Wordpad, which puts images "in line" with the text, so they don't paste under/over text and other images and have to be messed with every time to try to get something legible.

I saw that in 2008, Wine had a "port"?? for Wordpad. Exactly HOW can I run Wordpad in Linux via Wine?

Why doesn't Linux have something that works as cleanly and as fast as Wordpad .rtf ??? Abiword is a joke compared to ease and speed of Wordpad for handling images. Everyone keeps suggesting text editors as a replacement, which don't handle images AT ALL, even poorly, like Abiword. Does Microsoft have a hundred-year patent or something on .rtf format?

Thanks,
AnneF

You might start with the Wine website: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManag...=1757#testdata

As to why you would not find something like WordPad for Linux, I think the like answer goes something like this (and this in my opinion only): Wordpad was a stripped down word processor for folks who wanted some word processing capability, but didn't want to pay for MS Office. Since Linux offers full-featured office suites under open source licenses, a need for a striped down word processor likely was not seen as compelling.

If you don't like Abiword, there are several well-established alternatives to choose from. Me, I'm a long-time LibreOffice user (and before that OpenOffice).

Basically yes, RTF is a proprietary document format developed by Microsoft. MS had published its specification intil 2008 for cross platform interchange but who knows which parts. In addition, the open source editors may not implement the entire published specification.

Supposedly Apache OpenOffice, Bean, Calligra, KWord, LibreOffice and NeoOffice can also view, edit and save RTF files. I have no idea how well they support images.

Basically you need to install the Windows application using wine. It does not run currently install apps from a dual boot system. You do need to download the WordPad installer then run it via wine. However, the WineHQ database on WordPad is quite old so I have no idea if it will work or not.

Two suggestions.

1) Try Ted;
2) Write it in LaTeX, then convert to RTF with latex2rtf.

LibreOffice and OpenOffice handle images just fine. They will even save in rich text format if you ever need it. As Frank said, we don't have to use makeshifts in Linux when you can find a premium that's actually designed for the job.
