How does Linux compare to *BSD?
 

Hey folks,

I just came back from a Linux exposition, and firstly it was great, however I was given FreeSBIE which for who don't know is basically a LiveCD of FreeBSD with a few more programs.

Now, it came with the last XFCE... and my impressions? WOW.
It was great - it was quick, especially for a LiveCD. It worked lovely, and XFCE was very easy and simple to use; and the graphics were superb. To be honest, it was much more than what I was expecting.

Now I'm wondering though, what are the real differences between Linux and *BSD? Which *BSD is better?
Why would one choose *BSD over Linux? And vice versa?

freebsd is very different from gnu/linux. they are both unix/POSIX system, yeah, but that was it.

- they have a different license model
- completly different kernel

in addition, u cant run any linux apps on a *bsd box.

when u have a ready setted up box with gui and so on u dont see the differents at first sight, but when u work with the shell u see it

i use only linux cause i read all literature about it (e.g. about the kernel) and i dont want to acclimate on *bsd, cause of the differents.

also, *bsd isnt splitted up like the gnu/linux distros. lets talk about freebsd; u always have the same fhs, the same packetmanagement software (ports) and so on.

thats what i know but i never worked on a *bsd box so i would like to hear somethin about it from someone who already worked with it : )

FreeBSD comes with linux emulation so you can run linux apps on it and from what I hear pretty well. As has been said, once you start playing with the command line you start to see the differences. FreeBSD has the package management system that inspired the linux ones that people rave about. Gentoo's Portage? Derivitive of Ports from BSD :)

I've ran FreeBSD here as a learning experience/dev server and it goes alright but I haven't really used it that much. Oh and on that live CD have a play with fluxbox it looks insane as well :D

Mac OSX is freeBSD based right??

will Linux packages run on it??

just would like to know before i buy a Mac :)

i hate PC's and sorry but i like Mac OSX better then Linux Distros.

OS X is based on the Darwin kernel which is turn is a modified FreeBSD kernel. You can download an X Server to run and use Fink to compile linux apps to install on your OS X box, it's not as simple as it is on linux but you can do it yeah.
