Dee-bee-yen

If it was Dehb-yin or Deh-whatever, there would be two B's, as in Debbian.

Large parts of LQ is just us searching for asked questions: how do Debra and Ian Murdock pronounce Debian...
Quote:
How does one pronounce Debian and what does this word mean? The project name is pronounced Deb'-ee-en, with a short e in Deb, and emphasis on the first syllable. This word is a contraction of the names of Debra and Ian Murdock, who founded the project.

@leclerc can you find a way to show the sound of en ‹é› to native English-speakers? I find not one English word using that sound. The German ad-hoc pronunciation of Debian uses that, like in „Débiahn“. The pretentious say (of course) Diebien.

We were told in our French classes that it is the sound half way between the e of get and the i of fit.

Here in America we love accents, of course I think we're better at stereotyping than y'all?!.

I like to pronounce "Debian" as "Da BEAN", and in doing so think of the Cloud Gate sculpture in Chicage, which is affectionately known as, "The Bean".
