Question How do you mount an LVM partition with a liveCD?

I need to boot in to Knoppix and mount my root LVM2 partition... how do I do that?

Grab a terminal window, then:

su -
mkdir /mnt/tmp (if it's not already there)
vgscan
vgchange -ay
lvs (determine the volume group name and logical volume name you're interested in)
mount /dev/vg_name/lv_name /mnt/tmp
cd /mnt/tmp
ls -l

If you have a very old version of Knoppix, it may not have LVM included. You can install LVM like this (you would have to do this before the vcsan command shown above):

su -
modprobe dm-mod
apt-get update
apt-get install lvm-common lvm

Newer versions of Knoppix have LVM included, so you wouldn't have to do these modprobe and apt-get's.

If you need to do something like change the root password in the volume you mounted, you will have to chroot to it:

su -
chroot /mnt/tmp
passwd ...
exit

... otherwise, you'd be changing the root password in the booted Knoppix system, not the underlying distro who's root filesystem you are mounting on /mnt/tmp.
