How do you install new video drv?

I recently had to install RH9 under a low-res installation method...the detection system w/in the install program continued to incorrectly identify my video card as an Intel 815...when in fact it is a S3 Savage IX...I found a generic linux driver for the S3 Savage but I have no idea how to install it.

The system boots fine but of course everything is super-large (icons) and when I go into the gui display properties for RH I cant seem to figure out how to navigate to the file that I've unzipped/untarred. The display properties will show me a list of drivers available but there isnt a "browse" button available.

Another mystery, within the display properties my actual video card is listed but when I choose it I'm told to logout and back in to make the new
driver active...I do so but the same low-res driver is installed (not the S3 driver), RH seems to ignore my request.

What am I doing wrong within the display properties OR how do I switch/install the downloaded/untarred video driver?

Read up and make sure your card is what you think it is:

Linux doesn't guess at these things, and something is triggering it to read it as an i815 video chip.

Take the card out and look at it. Write down the chipset number. And then choose the proper driver. Btw, do you have an onboard video card? That would certainly confuse the issue if it's not disbled via motherboard jumper and bios if so.

Need more info to diagnose.
