how do i stop backup files?

Linux is running on a 6.4GB hard drive i bought from my friend for 5 bucks. the Linux package alone was 1gb and the game server is 1gb and i plan on installing a few more things......the problem is that as soon as it starts to double everything up, the hard drive is similar to a 3gb drive because everything is duplicated. how can i turn that thing off?
