how do i mount ramdisk created with splashutils?

splashutils provides splash_geninitramfs script which (as the name indicates) generates a ram disk with a background image displayed during the system boot up. i'd like to mount that ram disk, but i'm occuring problems. i've read that all i should to is:
Code:
# cat /boot/initrd > /dev/ram1
# mount /dev/ram1 /mnt/rd
unfortunately it won't work. could anyone help me. to be honest i've never worked with ramdisks so i don't know too much about them.
