how do i mount a drive?

How do I mount a hard disk on a server? I've never done this before to be honest. How do I know "where it is" or what directory, ie "/backup" or such to mount to? Please explain.
How do I see all disks on the server, their full info?
I need to format it first.

I'm using IDE. This is what whm's server info shows (before mount)

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3 75G 3.4G 68G 5% /
/dev/hda1 99M 14M 80M 15% /boot
none 498M 0 498M 0% /dev/shm

Thanks
- newbie -

specs:
cpanel/whm
centos 3.3

/sbin/fdisk -l

Will display all hard drives and partition info.

mount -t <type> /dev/hdXX /mnt/<some-directory>

Where XX is the drive and partition and <some-directory> is an empty directory either in /mnt (popular place for mounts) or any other empty directory you create.

If this is a new drive, you'll need to format it and create filesystem on it but yet I won't go any further until you provide more info.

Okay, thanks for the info.. it appears you have a /dev/hdc with no partitions.. are you trying to imply more questions or something? What do you want to do with this drive? Do I need to ask more questions or are you going to provide more details in what your trying to accomplish?

This is a leased server, I have another server which I had the techs at data center take the 80gb drive to install on this server.
They said they cabled it and I just have to mount it.

I just want to mount the 2nd 80gb drive after formatting it and use it as a mirror drive

Mirror? Like in RAID?

Okay. Format it and then create a mount for it..

If you want partitions setup though to split it up or just one big drive, use cfdisk or fdisk..

cfdisk /dev/hdc

Then format the drive, if your using ext3 with a journaling filesystem, do a command like this (where hdc1 is the partition you created, repeat if you created more than one partition.. ex: hdc2, hdc3.. etc):

mke2fs -j /dev/hdc1

When its done, create your empty directory you want to mount it from:

cd /

mkdir backup

mount /dev/hdc1 /backup

And if you want it to mount automatically at boot time.. add it to your /etc/fstab file.
