Unhappy how do i get online?

hello, how do i go online? my linux redhat 7.2 computer is all of two days old. hahaha... anyway i don't know how to go online. i did the "internet configuration" thing and it just said "activating device" for a long time and nothing happened so i exited. by the way i use dial-up.
for some reason when i use gnome, there are these two weird lines below the mouse cursor all the time. it doesn't happen with kde, but my mouse cursor freezes more often there.
ahh, what else? ah. i know this is retarded, but how do you shutdown your computer when you're in the black-and-white mode? ctrl-alt-del always restarts it, and i end up just turning off the UPS and unplugging my computer.
thanks.

Shut down is a command... "shutdown -h now" or "init 0"

What type of modem are you connecting with?
A lot of the 'winmodem' types don't work without some extra files.
A correctly setup modem is found on "/dev/modem" port.

The extra weird lines say there is an X-windows configuration problem, usually with the language/font settings.
There are a lot of updates to install for various bugs from 7.2. Have you seen any magazines with a copy of RH8?
It is a much more complete version, especially for newcomers...

# shutdown -h now
or
# halt
run as root.
If you have advanced power management enabled in the kernel it will turn it off else you have to manually push the power-button (It says Power Down when its done shutting down).

oh wait, my distro's rh7.3 after all, not 7.2. but it probably doesn't make much of a difference, right?

winmodems arent a make or model, more of a type.

Not too sure of the exact difference, but if you check the model - probably in the control centre - and then follow the link posted by peter_robb, you will find out whether it is a "winmodem" or not.

Most of the advice around here seems to suggest the use of an external modem. As they seem to work better with linux and not relying on any software "tricks" like a winmodem does.

Though if you surf under window$ try googles linux pages and you should be able to find something about modifying winmodems.

John

Almost all internal modems these days are winmodems. This is because there are fewer motherboards that have isa slots. Being all pci slots almost guarantees that the manufacturer is putting in a winmodem.

They are just much cheeper due to the fact that they are not real modems and lack real modem hardware.

Actual modems are generally expensive.

Well done David,

That's what I was trying to say, but because I know the square root of f*** all, I wasn't really sure of how to put it - hence the suggestion of following the link that peter_robb posted after the shoelessworm establishes which modem he? has actually got.

ha ha hah ha, John, I love reading your posts. You are very funny!

Some of the winmodems are getting linux drivers written for them lately, so with any luck you will be one of the fortunate few.

Cool

oh sorry, another question. i've been wondering, seeing that a lot of people list more than one linux distro under their usernames. so you must have like three or more computers at home! or do you install two distros per comp you own?

I've got Mandy/Slack/LFS/ and XP all on the same comp. This is spread over 2 HD's one at 20GB, and one at 40GB.

But I am in the process of building me a server box, it will exclusively run slack til I find the time and knowledge to build it pure LFS.

I used to run RH 7.3, win 98, win xp all on a 40 gig HD, make sure you have a sharing partition fat32 (so you can share you MP3's between OS's =P)

Now I have RH 7.3 on a single server, win 98 on an old laptop, and Win XP for Gaming.

Make sure you register for the redhat network and update once you get your modem running.....win modems suck!

I have several computers, some with only Linux. Some of them dual boot to Win XP and Win ME.

I am about to install Mandrake on one of them so it will have two distros.

if i have redhat 7.3 installed on one comp now, and i wanna add another linux distro to it sometime in the future, can i just install it or do i have to reformat the hard disk? (it's already partitioned.)

haha after reading yr posts, i want new computers! (i'm using my XP pc now. when i wanna play w/ my rh 7.3, i gotta unplug the keyboard n monitor wires n plug it in my rh 7.3.) haven't bought me an external modem yet.

By the sound of it, the next thing that you will buy is a copy of partition magic, then you can chop your hard disc into bite sized chunks - as long as you only install bite sized software, you should be alright !!!!!!!!

I was lucky enough to have a fat32 partition going spare so I stuck my mandrake in that. As for some of the nutters who post here, last time I was counting, I spotted someone claiming to have 8 different distro's running on some sort of raid array!

Nuf said!!

happy new year

regards

John
