John,

So, you're saying if i want sound on my computer so i can listen to news and music and what, i should switch to mandrake (9.0 is good?) because it seems impossible to find a way to do it on RH?, and evidently, you've spelled out how to put chinese on here.

By the way, i'm switching to linux now. I'm trying it out by using another computer as a router before i buy a router for adsl; it's basically a choice between a $60 subscription for antiirus and a $30 router. I think the incredible customer support you can get from linux is what's going to tip me over, though.

JDW I agree 100% with you, but tell me if fcitx 2.01 can be used if you have selected English desktop ?.

Somehow teh Japanese worked in Mandrake without any install or thirth party software , but the simplified had problems.

What about SuSe does that have Chinese Input ?

How do I enter characters of another language?

Hi,

Not exactly. I said that I preferred mandrake as a home desktop Linux distro option, as it is probably catered for that market. Red Hat specializes in servers/business end-of-town etc. which is also very cool.

However, I found that setting up my system with MDK is easier and I always seem to have problems with RH with my Creative sound card - if i was a guru i could probably solve it in time, but i am not, so i will go with the easy option. RH is not impossible, it just didn't happen on my PC...

If you're new to Linux, i've found that Mandrake is a pretty good choice, but not the only choice...it is all a matter of taste and personal requirements...

No I started with Linux in 1992 with redhat, and then I tried Mandrake which I did not get on with at all, so now I'm back with Redhat enterprise AS & WS, and also Fedora which I think is not bad.

We don't even have sound cards or games on our computers here.

Do you know if SuSe has Chinese Input ?

No the best Mandrake with Chinese is MDK 9.0 that works even as good as Windows 2000, but try fedora also very good. MDK 10.0 I don't know I dident even know there was a MDK 10.

How do I enter characters of another language?

my opinion is that MDK 9.2 is better...it's just that the older chinese input servers such as xcin and chinput seem to be "left behind" by subsequent versions of the mdk distro. If you try a more modern-style input program such as scim or fcitx, I think you'll find it works just fine. (and the input windows have nice colours too!).

Not forgetting that you are looking at this as being for office PCs, where your local Chinese staff are not very interested in tinkering with the setup to get it going correctly. None of my colleagues here would be interested in that either! My perspective is that of a home user who likes to tinker with it to make it work properly, and for that Mandrake 9.2 is better than OK.

Please do not slag off Mandrake 9.2 just because it doesn't suit your office's IT needs, as quite frankly Red Hat does not suit my home needs very well, but I realize that it is not really designed for that...

I don't see how you had such a problem with 9.1/9.2, I had it working in no time...and better than I could with 9.0!

cheers,

jdw

P.S Mandrake 10.0 is in beta-release stage, so I am sure you'll be delighted to hear my opinion of the Chinese setup when it is at full release stage! )

Yeaaa I will be waiting, perhaps I was from the beginning brained washed with redhat, and that is why it always worked for me without any problems, and MDK was new to me so I could consider my self a NEWBIE in MDK.
I also think you are right MDK for home and games redhat for office and servers, you should try teh redhat enterprise that works, but then it is also more for office and server issues, but try fedora that is also very good, only one thing for you guys who can not live without GUI redhat does not have a " DISK DRAKE " only at install time it has the " DISK DRUIT " which is also very good, but after install it is only from the console no GUI , but you get use to that, and I like it.
Remember try not to use the muse to much, the doctor says it is bad for your arm, so perhaps redhat took the doctor advice.
I'm trying fedora on three workstations and so far very nice, apart from the update is very painfull, other than that it looks like we will be installing fedora on 16 workstations, and leave Windows2000 on 4 and then redhat enterprise as the two servers, and admin workstations, and later we would convert all workstations to fedora total some 62 workstations.
Sorry I will not say a bad word about Mandy again..

Hi,
If you are interested in an English desktop and chinese input, take a look at my HOWTO http://gerrit-worldwide.de/chinesischlinux2_eng.html
It is written for a German desktop and SCIM as input system, but at the end it is the same procedure.
Hope that helps.
Burna
