How do I determine a computer's IP address?

I feel like I should know this, but I don't.

But is this link applicable in Linux as well.I tried in windows, it gave the correct IP, and then i tried on Linux box, then there is a mismatch in the IP address, that I got through this link ,and that I got from the command "ifconfig -a"
