Question How do I create a local user on a NIS slave server?

Even though my Gentoo box is a NIS slave, 'adduser' will create new users in /etc/passwd (I'm happy with that), but it won't create the new local user if that user already exists in NIS. How can I get around this problem?

Many thanks,
Steve

should that be possible at all ?

that would undermine authentication against the nis server !

I have to apologise, my setup was a NIS client, not server - I must have stopped it being a server ages ago. All I needed to do to create a local account, irrespective of NIS, was to stop ypbind, run 'adduser' then restart ypbind.
