Hmmm. It looks like your version of ps doesn't support --ppid (at least, I think that's the one it's complaining about). You might need to check the man page for a way to specify the parent process ID. What you are trying to do is restrict the ps list to those processes that are direct descendants of init (pid 1). Any way you can do that should be good. Make sure the -o option is using valid names as well...

I don't know I know there are many variants of ps out there, but I thought those differences would be between Unix systems, not often just Linux systems. Good luck in your research.
