How do I add fonts in X

How do you add fonts in X without resarting the X server?

I'm on rh9, running xfs.

I've added a font to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF

I've run mkfontdir, ttmkfdir fc-cache, signaled xfs with HUP, USR1 and USR2 and run xset fp rehash. I can't think of anything else.

If I do service xfs restart, the X server will soon crash.

Surely it is possible to add fonts without quitting everything and restarting!!!????

Nevermind: this seems to do the trick:
sudo ttmkfdir -o fonts.scale;sudo mkfontdir; xset fp rehash; sudo killall -HUP xfs
