Discovered Linux

It all started when the kids went to collage. I know it was RedHat, I don't remember the number maybe 3? and it was in 1990.

How Did You Discover Linux?

Back in January 1992 we started working in Linux Slackware to see if we could use it to build small devices.

Slackware

It was late '92 early '93.
I was searching a Walnut Creek catalogue for Richard Stallman's GNU utilities for AT&T SVR4.
I came across Patrick Volkerding selling his distribution.
I sent $50 for 52 3=1/2 inch floppies....
I am not sure, but I do not think it was even called Slackware yet.
I wrestled it for weeks and months.....
Having to write you own xconfig...
Heck, all the configs.
Every package had to be loaded from source - debugged - compiled.
Several even had to be manually copied as an install.
I still think Slackware has the neatest, cleanest install of all.

The biggest problem was by default 3 users were created. Satan, Snake? and another one.
If you did not remember to delete the users or at least change the passwords....
Instant hack....

I forget the distro. Long, long ago the boss came to me to try out this OS that was like Unix but worked on a PC. I got it going and couldn't do much with it except to show that yes a lot of the Unix based commands were there for this Linux. So they made me the Linux guy there and honestly I've never turned back.

How Did You Discover Linux?

As an embedded engineer back on 2010 when the company tried Freescale running Linux (after a huge failure using TI/eSOL).

It was back about 16 years ago, a friend of mine suggested linux....I started with the early rendition of Ubuntu, and this was when Windows XP was fairly new. It's been a long journey with Linux and now using LM 17.3 64bit, and haven't really had to many issues, other than finding printer drivers for my lexmark x4530 all-in-one printer. Linux has been good, some minor issues here and there, but very smooth, fast, reliable...

How I discovered Linux

I started using older Panasonic Toughbooks 6 years ago, and some of them came with Windows 95 and XP. There were alot of problems with the touchscreens and wireless networking using outdated operating systems. A friend of mine introduced me to Linux, and there was no looking back. I soon discovered how sophisticated Linux was and how easy it is to use. My preference is using forms of Debian Linux, and my daily driver is LMDE2 on my toughbook at home. Best regards, Kris

I used to work in a mainframe shop, I built Slackware as part of a bet from Mainframe systems team. If I remember correctly, this was in 1994. The install process for Slackware back in those days was a bit daunting, but I got it done and won $10 in the process. I discovered Red Hat Linux in 1995 (version 4.1 if I recall). After a brutal Slackware install, Red Hat Linux was a revelation. I've been a Red Hat fan for about 20 years now.

1) Recurring and increasing problems and maintenance demands with Windows and the Microsoft Office suite. 2) Posts on Windows forums by people using Linux got me curious. 3) Trying it got me hooked.

Long Journey to Linux

Exposed to Unix back in the late 1980s, used Interactive Unix in 1994, then exposed to Linux back in 1996/7; became disgusted with Windows in 2000, even more so in 2003, and finally made the switch to Linux in 2013. I am never going back to Windows!

From a Galaxy Far Far Away ...

I knew of Unix back in my 20's. I am now 60. That's been nearly 40 years of my life. I used Linux several times since then when I became interested in wanting to try a Unix-like OS that didn't cost entire-body-parts. Even subscribed to Red Hat in the early days, but became disinterested in it when Microsoft Windows and MacOS started becoming popular. I started using Windows daily, Windows 3.1, NT 3.x, 95, NT 4.0, 98, 2000, XP, 2000 Server ... stayed with 2000 Advanced Server till XP became more popular then switched to XP, Windows 7 ... tried W8 but hated it so much I went back to W7 and stayed with Windows 7 till Microsoft started pushing Windows 10 out to everyone's computers. At that point I just got fed up with Micro$oft and went back to Linux starting with the Ubuntu distribution. I now run Ubuntu Linux on one computer and FreeBSD/Gnome on another computer ... side-by-side.

If there's any program that definitely requires Windows and cannot be installed via WinE, I boot back into W7 and use it there. Which really is nothing but [MMO] Games that can't be installed on Linux. I must say, Linux distributions make learning Linux a hell-of-a-lot-easier than 40 years ago ... that coupled with the Internet to ask questions to overcome problems. Google rules!

It was books!

I have been working in libraries on and off since I was 17. We used to get books for Linux coming in and out with all these weird animal pictures on the covers. I dipped into them and found out about Linux. When I became a librarian, I found out more about Linux (and open source everything)! I promised myself when I had a spare computer, I'd try it. So, when my old Toshiba Satellite became outmoded, I wiped the drive and loaded Linux Mint. Am now using Ubuntu on the same machine and, after some tweaking, it works very well. The Windows machine died a month ago and has been moved to the floor, replaced by the Linux laptop. :)
