What distribution are you using?

Red hat 9.0

I don't know that much about Red Hat 9.0 except that it's an old distro.
Do either of these pages help?

Have you thought of trying another distro? Maybe Ubuntu or Mepis?

You should always have Gnome or KDE already installed unless you're using some build-from-the-ground-up distro like Slackware, Debian, Gentoo, or Linux from Scratch.

I am not sure you will be able to install any of the latest KDE or GNOMe versions on REdhat 9 because of dependency issues. Redhat 9 is an old distro and support as well as updates have been discontinued by Redhat. Take a look at this page.
