How can I have my universal remote control to work with my irda receiver

I bought a Sony universal remote control that has learning capabilities. I also own a Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard which uses an irda. I would like to use my remote control to control my mythtv. I've done some research and I have (I believe) the correct config file for my remote control. However, I don't know how to tell my remote control to communicate with the irda device and to be able to know if it even works. I tried pointing it at the receiver and I tried scanning for the correct code but no dice. The instructions only tell me to hit power after each try but if the machine is not set up right to respond to this how can I tell if I have the right code? Any help?

Most IRDA receivers will not work with lirc. See this page: http://www.lirc.org/irda.html

Actually I was just thinking if my wireless mouse and keyboard are working doesn't that mean lirc is working with my irda adapter? After all if I knock off the irda service the keyboard and mouse stop working.
