I have a home network setup of 3 systems:

1st: old pentium II system running IP cop (linux)- used for firewall/router

2nd: my workstation running mandrake 8.1 I use for everything: surfing,

e-mail, games (xmame) mainly, watching dvd with xine, ripping songs,

downloading programs.

3rd: wifes computer running win xp pro.

I had to build internet server as wife got tired of me always messing with

my computer as i had the main internet connection thru it.

I do plan on building a file server running linux when i get around to it.

Call me M$fanboy if you must, but in a rare moment of honesty I have to admit that for my workstation needs Linux isn't there yet, so I am using XP Pro.

For now at home I have 2 Linux machines accounting for 50% of my home network, the first is an old PackardHell P100 RH7.1 Router, and the other is a rocking P166 RH7.1 SGI Application server running FTP/SSH/Apache/DNS/DHCP.

Okay my setup in my home:

1. Main machine running Slack 8.0. Used for graphics, html editing for upload to offsite host, and anything a desktop computer will be used for.
2. Second machine running Slack 8.0. This is my main machine I usually browse the web, irc, ssh into from work and ftp server.. mainly network stuff I use this machine for.
3. Third machine is running Win2K and Mandrake 8.2 at moment. Mandrake about to be wiped with FreeBSD when I get the time. This machine is used for gaming mainly when I am rarely in the mood and installing other OS's to play with. Basically the crap machine..
4. This machine sits over in the corner doing nothing most of the time with win98 on it. About to get wiped with Slack 3.0 to play with since it only has a pentium 166mhz.

5. This is my roomates computer.. running only win2k cause he's a loser and scared to run linux.. I think I am on the verge of getting him to install it though :D

6. Computer in works for other roomate. Probably run win98 and maybe some sort of linux distro.. he is more inclined to learn. :)

are you still in school tricky? you did mention room mates...

trickykid 04-28-2002 12:11 AM

i am in a solaris cert class...
yeah, i have two roomates ( friends i've known since i was 9 ), leasing a three bedroom home... but trust me, i don't plan on living with them forever.. :D

how long does the solaris class last? is it in demand these days? (the cert i mean, not solaris ;))

Well, I have at home a 4 Computer Network... The oldest is my father's... it is run by Win98 :p
The other machine had run LFS, but it belongs to my sister, so i'll have to put on Win98 as well...
My main machine has both Win98 and SuSe8. Win98 just for a few progs, Linux doesn't have YET. But SuSe is used for Internet, E-Mail, developement, text writing etc.
The fourth Computer, I built it on my own, is a DualHead System, just used to play around with Linux. (That's why it has 2 graphics boards in it :)) and getting to know how you can get along without using yast2 :p

well they have the week long crash courses if you want to go that route. i took the twice a week, 3 month long course. makes it easier to study, prepare...etc.
well, every solaris job i see usually states a cert is either preferred or is required. i am getting it to help my chances to get my foot in the door. there have been a few jobs so far, if i had my cert already i could have gotten the job or at least applied for it. :D
