Lightbulb hot swappable ide hard disks

I just wanted to know is Linux capable of fully hot swappable ide drives on the fly. I just wanted to find out if its capable of doing this as a means of backups etc. I cant find anything on the net ...yet. And if so does anyone know how it detects the drive etc.
