hostname changing
When I boot up my computer I keep getting a different hostname. It may be one for a few times then it will switch to another hostname.
I am using RHL 9. My ISP uses DCHP for IP assignment. I found the other thread under distributions about someone that had a problem with changing hostname. I cannot use netconfig to set the hostname because I do not have a static IP address. I do not have the file HOSTNAME on my computer. The problem began after my wife visited a certain website which attempted to install a program on the computer. Since that time I have been having this problem with the hostname. I did not detect any virus when scanned. I did a search for the hostname that it usually reverts to but cannot find it in a search checking text files. What are my possible sources of the problem and the solution? Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
did you try to edit :
---> /etc/sysconfig/network that says: ---> HOSTNAME= |
/etc/sysconfig/network does not show the hostname that keeps appearing. That is why I am confused.
Example: The hostname comes up as "B5R3S8" but I cannot find any reference to this hostname anywhere. All settings for hostname are localhost.localdomain. |
Debian keeps hostname in '/etc/hostname'. Not sure about RH. You should also check '/etc/hosts' I don't think that is the problem.
Perhaps it helps. Ott |
Been there done that and still the hostname keeps changing on me. Right now it keeps changing between my MAC address and some name I have no idea where it is coming from. What is changing the hostname?
