Hobbying around with linux and electronics?or something else fun?
 

Hey guys,

I remember finding a url 1 year ago of a site where they were selling some little lcd screens that you could connect though usb and display various unix commands output through python scripting.

I wonder if anyone knows anything similar or something else of fun that you can do with electronics and linux, like maybe using an old mobile for something.

Anything would be appreciated :)

Not Linux-specific, but for years people have been finding interesting things to do with the PC parallel port. There are a number of web sites, support libraries, system/kernel calls, and free source code for playing with the parallel port in Linux.
In general, I find Linux, and modern PC architecture in generel, a lot tougher to use for low-level hacking than the old DOS + real-mode + ISA bus architecture. With modern OS's and hardware, there are a lot of hurdles to pass before you can touch the hardware with code.

I'm not entirely sure if this is what you're looking for, but I've always been interested in programming self-built robots with computers. We did something like that when I was taking a physics/electronics minor, and we programmed the little dudes to run all over the place using BASIC. I've always wanted to get my own programmable robot but haven't had the time/money/etc. Lego Mindstorms kits come to mind, but they're very pricey for us poor college students. Anyway, just my thoughts on the subject :D
