Hiding IP Address when using IRC servers
 

When I use an IRC server and join any room it says I have joined and other various details along with a line such as n=Michael_aust@86.5.4.3.1 (Michael)

If I run whois: on my self from the IRC client, this is shown again. However if I were to run it on other people it mostly shows something like n=JOHNDOE@Thiswebsite.org (JOHNDOE)

How do I stop my self from showing my IP Address on IRC servers, or change it so that it is something like the above JOHNDOE line?

I set my hostname as debian during the install. Was I supposed to set anything else?

I am using Konversation 0.19 if this is any help

There are some tools on windows that allow blocking IP but the way they work is a service that you go through all the time then it goes out to the internet. It is a proxy server type setup that most do. As far as seeing the name I would say the IRC server does a dns search on the IP and if it exist then it post that info instead of the IP.

I don't have a domain name or anything, so does that mean my only choice is to run through some kind of anonymisation proxy? Would Tor and Privoxy be the sort of thing to do? This would show the nodes IP address. Or would this not work, because I would keep changing my connection nodes and that the nodes would already be blocked.

Any other things I can do?

Just to make sure you understand the proxy needs to be somewhere else than at your location or at least on an IP that does not matter. So when IRC shows IP it will be the IP of the proxy. Now for domain name maybe the one running the proxy may have the IP set and of course should show that name instead of IP.

I have found what needed to be done. I had to have afreenode staff member enable host cloak on my nick, now my IP is not shown by whois.
