Read up about ACPI.

I found that it doesn't work to well in Linux. Standby is possible, but my computer doesn't wake up properly afterwards. Also you can only put your computer to sleep as Root.

Hibernate is also possible, search for Software Suspend on Google. By all accounts this is extremely difficult to set up.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Maybe someone else can...

i was also curious about this and was going to post similar question..
i use ubuntu when i have time to mess around with linux and get familiar... there is a standy mode, i believe.. but i think it simply puts the monitor into standby (black screen, power led flashes) and does not have same effect as M$ standby which is nice because it actually puts the computer to sleep requiring less power, etc.
so, like phoenix, is there an equivalent 'standby' for linux as the one in windowz?
