Help with vi and read only files

I'm trying to modify /etc/crontab using vi. When I try to save and quit, vi tells me that I'm trying to modify a read only file and to use "!" to override. I'm logged in as root running FC4. I ended up using gedit to make the changes, but I'd like to do this with vi. Thx.
