Ok... I downloaded all the rpm's from ftp.sourceforge.net. I had to download a couple more packages to make all the dependency problems go away. Then I did a "rpm -Uvh *.rpm" in the directory with all the rpms. Everything seemed to go fine. I log out and I see that the RedHat logon manager has a new option (KDE). I select KDE and logon. The screen goes white, then black, and then throws me back to the logon screen. I really have no clue what to do next

I did look in /var/log/messages. There was one line that looked interesting:

depmod: can't locate module char-major-81

Looking in my .Xsessions_errors file there are couple messages:

Xlib: extension "XINERAMA" missing on display ":0.0".

subshell.c: couldn't get terminal settings: inappropriate ioctl settings for device

Any thoughts/suggestions on what to do... or what these messages might mean would be greatly appreciated

Problem Solved

I finally solved the problem by launching Konqeror from the command line. It said a file (libsomething.so.0) was missing. All I had to do was make a symbolic link pointing to the version of the file I did have (which was more recent).
