Unhappy Help with GRUB boot loader

I have just clean-installed a copy of Red Hat 7.2 for a networking class. The installation went smoothly, but everyone in class seemed to suffer from the same problem after installation: when GRUB was chosen as the boot loader, as soon as the computer is restarted, the system hangs at a screen that states "GRUB loading stage2..." or something similiar to that. Our teacher believes it may be problems with the video card, which is an ATI Rage 128. I've checked the compatibility list, though, and it says it's compatible. When we reinstalled and chose LILO as the boot loader instead, we were all able to boot completely into the GUI. Can anyone help meh figure out just what is wrong and how this problem can be solved? Note that EVERYONE in my class has had the same problem, as every computer in that one room is basically the same config. Someone help quick!

if you post your grub file that can help determine where the hang is. I've found that if you start with the simplest grub file, and get the computer to boot, then you can go from there.

Actually, I can't get the grub file at the moment, as the program itself is at school. My teacher's expecting someone to find a solution to the problem based on what I had already stated. Is there maybe a quick way to fix the problem, such as replacing the existing grub file with one that works?

I don't think that it's a video card problem. Because of the way linux boots, if it were the video card it would probably be behaving differenlty. Besides, I have an old laptop that has a rage 128 in it and this kind of thing never happened...well it did, but it wasn't from the video card. It could be a powermanagement issue, it could be the way the bios is setup. It can be any number of things but it's hard to nail it down without seeing your file. Plus redhat makes funny grub files anyways. Is this a dual boot machine? Also, why in the world are you using 7.3? There have been a lot of advancements since 7.3. You could always download and burn a copy of knoppix or slax or something (LIVEcds) to test the computer to see if that boots. That would also allow you to access the system files. Just a thought.

Hi,

I've got a similar problem. I'm running Red Hat Enterprise WS v3. I was forced to reboot the machine via the reset button and when it came back up it hung and just said

GRUB Loading Stage2

I rebooted and it just kept saying that. I tried booting of my linux CD, but it would just say ISO0996 where it said GRUB Loading Stage2 before. I finally tried booting of a floppy disk and that worked. After booting off the floppy I was able to put the CD in and load up the rescue shell. I looked around there and the /etc/grub.conf file looks okay. So I ran grub-install /dev/hda. After running that I exited the rescue shell and now when the machine tries to boot up it says

GRUB Loading Stage1.5

and just hangs there. Does anyone know what's going on and know if there's anything I might be able to try? Thanks so much.

Just a quick note, I just rebooted and went into the BIOS to see if something was wrong there. Nothing looked out of the ordinary. Then I edited discarding changes and the machine tried to boot up, but this time it hung with word GRUB on the screen.
