Unhappy Help! Vim not working

I recently tried installing kvim 6-1. Everything seemed to compile ok, but when I type kvim I get a command not found error, and now vim doesnt work either. When I use vim to edit a document (in this case a c++ program) insert doesnt seem to work, I have to press i several times, and even when I can insert text I dont get the INSERT prompt at the bottom of the screen. There are some other abnormalities as well, like the backspace doesn't work (i have to use delete), as well as the color being gone and the tidals are missing from the side of the screen.

I tried reinstalling the latest version of vim (6.2) but this didn't seem to fix it. I am currently running redhat 8. Any help would be appreciated.

vim is a "enhanced" vi, try vi or elvis (vi clone that I like better)
