Help to Install Mandriva 2006

Now I have downloaded the latest Mandriva from a FTP site. This is a 64bit program. My new computer is a 64 bit one.I ran into the following obstacle. So I need your help.

[I have downloaded from the Internet two programs which diagnose my hardware. One is called ‘Everest’ and the other one is PC Wizard 2005. They are Windows programs. My computer has Windows XP. So I could work with Windows. ]

My IDE Controller is as follows:
(1) Ali M 5229 PCI BUS MASTER IDE CONTROLLER
(2) ATA /ATAPI

My NIC is as follows:

(1) Ali 5261 PCI Fast Ethernet

(2) ULi PCI Fast Ethernet Controller
[I gathered the above information about my NIC Card and the Motherboard using those two programs.]

Using the Partition Magic I have created Linux portion too. So half of the computer has NTFS file system for Windows XP and the other half has ‘Ext2’ file system for Linux.

The problem starts here; I got the problem in the middle of the installing process. Please read the following.

It gave me 3 options; they are ‘Yes’ , ‘No’ and ‘See hardware information’.

-----------------------------------------
Found ”Ali Corporation | Ali M 5289 Serial ATA / RAID Controller” , ‘sata_uli’ interfaces.
Do you have another one?

•. Yes

•. No

•. See hardware information
----------------------------------------

[ I selected the second alternative ‘ No’.]
Then I got the following message.

An error occurred
No valid devices were found on which to create new file systems. Please check your hardware.

Then I selected the 3rd alternative ‘See hardware information’.

(1)amd64-agp : Ali Corporation | M 1689 K8 Northbridge [Super K8 single chip] [Bridge_Host]

(2)unknown : Ali Corporation | AGP 8X Controller [ Bridge PCI]

(3)unknown : Ali Corporation | M 5249 HTT to PCI Bridge [BRIDGE_PCI]

(4)i2c – ali 1563 : Ali Corporation | M 1563 Hyper Transport South Bridge [BRIDG_ISA] SubVendor=0X1849 SubDevice=0X1563

(5)i2c – ali 1535 : Acer Laboratories Inc [Ali] M 7101 PMU [BRIDGE_OTHER] SubVendor=0X1849 SubDevice=0X7101

(6)snd-intel 8X0 : Acer Laboratories Inc [Ali] M 5455 PCI AC-Link controller Audio Device [MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO] [SubVendor=0X1849 SndDevice=0X0850]

(7)tulip : Ali Corporation | M 5263 Ethernet Controller [NETWORK_ETHERNET] SubVendor=0X1849 SubDevice=0X5263]

(8)alin 15X3 : Acer Laboratories Inc [Ali] | M 5229 IDE [STORAGE_IDE]

(9)sata_uli : Ali Corporation | Ali M 5289 Serial ATA/ RAID Host Controller [STORAGE_IDE] SubVendor=0X1849 SubDevice=0X5289

Finally, I selected the 1st alternative.

It gave me many options to select a drive. The following is the list.

1.ide-generic
2.a320 raid
3.advansys
4.arcmsg
5.ata_adma
6.cpqfc
7.sata_mv
8.aha152x

This means those drivers are at my disposal. When I selected a driver, the following message appears.

Loading aha152x failed. Do you want to try again with other parameters?

• Yes

• No

I selected the first alternative ‘Yes’.
The following message appears.
You may now provide options to module aha152x.
Options are in format “name=value name2=value2…”
For instance, “ io=0x300 irq=7”

[ How do I know those parameters. What are they? I believe if you can find those parameters, it would work and I could install the Mandriva. How do I find those strange values. Your help is appreciated.]

I am eagely waiting for your comments and help.

[In the help file they say the program to detect any IDE driver is not follproof.
The name of the program is Drakx. It further says you have to specify by hand. This is a hell; how do I know those things.]

Okay, I really have to ask, did you try the option ide-generic? I don't know if you have already, but if that doesn't work then I'm stumped. I really thought that all IDE controllers had to be compatible with a generic driver of some sort.

Thanks STrekFan for the reply.

I have tried that driver several times; it was my guess too. None of the listed drivers doesn't respond.

It is a program called DrakX is doing this IDE driver recognition. They say in the
help file that it is a not a foolproof program and sometimes you have to manually configure. Then I need those funny parameters.

How do I get them?

I removed the SATA hard disk and put a new IDE hard disk which is 200GB.

This was the problem.
