Help! linux freezes when mounting cd-roms
I just installed Red Hat 7.2 with a 2.4.7-10 kernel. Whenever I try to mount a cd-rom, the system freezes solid, even the keyboard and mouse. It doesn't matter whether I try to mount it from KDE, GNOME or a console. Linux also freezes when I try to mount a cd-rom in single user mode. After I reboot from the crash, I notice the following kernel error messages in the /var/log/messages file.
kernel: hdc: set_drive_speed_status: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error}
kernel: hdc: set_drive_speed_status: error=0xb4
kernel: hdc: ATAPI 40x CD-ROM drive, 128kB Cache, DMA
kernel: hdc: Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12
By the way, my CD-ROM drive is detected at boot time.
I'm sure it's not a hardware problem because I was able to mount cd-roms fine in RH 7.0 and 7.1. Could someone please tell me what's wrong! I really need to be able to use cd-roms in linux!
