Unhappy Help! linux freezes for a while after mounting flash disk

Hello,

I have already posted this question on tek-tips.com to and linux.be, but nobody seems to be able to help me.

So here goes:

I have a kernel with support for disk on chip devices. That is because I have a flash disk and I want to mount it. I have no swap (don't ask why) and that means that if I run out of memory, the system crashes.
Anyway, the system works fine until I mount the flash disk.

mount /dev/nftla /flash

and from thereon random freezes start to occur.
Sometimes the system freezes for about 30sec to 2minutes and then continues, sometimes it crashes (e.g. when I try to format the flash, its ext2, I know there is a better filesystem JJFS for flash drives but it would take a big adaption for me and I don't think the filesystem causes the problem).

The results of 'top':
Buffers are extremely high (194480K).

mem 251592K 246996K used,4596K free, ok shrd 194552K buff
swap 0K 0K used 0K free 26176K cached

So that leaves me with only about 4596K free, and no swap.
Can anyone help me ?? or tell me why or when buffer get high ?
I have the feeling it has somthing to do with those high buffers but I don't know enough about it.

I'm searching for a week on this problem now,and I really should fix it..

I'd really appreciate any help.

thnx in advance.
