This is what my XF86config-4 looks like for the 3Dlabs card.

Section "Device"
Identifier "3Dlabs Permedia2 (generic)"
VendorName "Unknown"
BoardName "Unknown"
Driver "glint"
VideoRam 8192
BusID "AGP:1:0:0"
#Option "no_accel"
# Clock lines

# Uncomment following option if you see a big white block
# instead of the cursor!
# Option "sw_cursor"

Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "screen0"
Device "3Dlabs Permedia2 (generic)"
Monitor "LiteOn|LiteOn A1770NSL"
DefaultColorDepth 24

Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "1024x768"

EndSubsection

EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout0"
Screen "screen0"
#Screen "screen1" RightOf "screen0"
InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"

InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

I found that the card is not fully supported but it works although I don't suffer the problem you have.

Also what distro your using for I found that as an example the card is not supported with RH 6.2

Ok first of all beware for I myself am a newbie so backup the files you play with. Which goes without saying

You modify the actual XF86config-4 file found in /etc/X11 to take effect you have to logout of X completely then back in or if your in console mode type mc and press enter that will open up mc hence navibate to the directory and highlight the file then press F4 to edit the file. Another method you can try is, in console mode type Xconfigurator if you distro supports it you can set up the card that way which inturn will write to the XF86config file depending of which version of Xfree you have.

XF86config-4 and XF86Config, the -4 is if your running Xfree version 4 or higher the other is for version 3.3.6 of Xfree I think.

You didn't specify what distro your running and my experience is very limited but also have a look for (I'm on Windows at the moment so can't confirm.) a folder called drivers /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers (I think thats the right address) and see if you can find the driver for 3Dlabs.

the XF86Config file can be either in /etc/X11 or just in /etc - you linux system WILL have it, as long as X is installed.

X 4.x will use the XF86Config file if XF86Config-4 is not present in the /etc directory. by default tho, it will use XF86Config-4. X 3.x only uses XF86Config.

for 4.x, the "glint" driver needs to be specified in the "Device" section. in 3.x, the support for the permedia2 cards is provided by the XF86_3DLabs server, and the driver shouldn't be specified in the config file.
