help getting k3b back...

Ok, the other night I was reading a post on linuxquestions.org about making back ups for DVDs. As I use my game box as my NFS server for movies for the family, etc... i figured it would be a good idea to also make some hard copy backups of several of the movies I have on the system.

One of the programs that was suggested for Debian testing was k9copy. problem is in order to install k9copy i had to remove k3b. well k9copy may be great for burning iso images out to DVD, but that does me no good when most of my DVDs on the harddrive are in full uncompressed native format of AUDIO and VIDEO folders with the .vob files in the video folder.

so when i try to reinstall k3b i am getting dependancy issues as several kde and k3b libs have been updated and k3b does not like that.

My guess is this can be fixed by cleaning up my sources.list so i am hopping one of the gurus around here can look at my list and sujest what should be changed in order to run Debian testing. really really do not want to mess with unstable and moving to stable might not be bad, but i dont want to wait a year before some of my apps are updated.

Debian KDE just underwent a major overhaul and was uninstallable from testing/unstable for some time. You might try installing from unstable. Add an unstable line to your sources.list:

then simulate the install

and see what will happen.

im not really comfortable with unstable on this system. last 2 i ran unstable made them to the point they were so unstable i ended up trashing them and formatting reinstall. have way to much data on this system to risk that.

any other way?

The other way would be probably to just wait until everything is fixed in testing, or visit Debian snapshot to try and go back in time. (http://snapshot.debian.net/) Even Debian testing is a moving target. You could also probably force a downgrade of everything to Debian stable, but you are likely to break something I would guess. This KDE problem is why I recently switched to Ubuntu. I broke KDE and it was uninstallable. I waited and waited for a fix to enter the repositories (a week or so), then gave up. Ubuntu is a fixed target for 6 months or so until the next release comes out, so I am less likely to break something just trying to keep my desktop up to date.

If you are that concerned about Debian unstable, you can delete the unstable entry in sources.list after fixing k3b. Any further updates won't happen then until it reaches Debain testing.

ok, i noticed that kplayer will be removed. will i be able to install kaffeine again? it was removed when k9copy was installed. i prefer kaffeine over mplayer.

to see if that package is broken.

if i take the -t out then it starts looking to install unstable package...

If i understand correctly the -t is for test, the -s is for show, but how does it work with -t unstable? isnt that just asking it to test in the unstable repository only? how can i install from the unstable only?

I believe the "-t" stands for "type" and "-t unstable" should install the unstable packages. If you do not have any /etc/apt/preferences file with package pinnning, the default will be to install the latest version of whatever you select. Therefore, you may not need to include "-t unstable" to get it to install unstable packages because unstable packages will be the latest version.

ahh ok. now the next question is why when i install k3b and kaffeine using the unstable respo. listed above did my / fill up? i have a 6G partition for / and it was maxed out after all of this fiasco. i was able to clean up enough space to log back into X, but i am still dangerously full on my /

Apt caches downloaded files in /var/apt/cache/archives The kde desktop environment is very big, so you are probably using a lot of cache space. Try:

Code:

du -h /var/apt/cache/archives

to see how much space the files there are taking up. You can remove stuff from there, you will just have to download the files again if you need to re-install.

It is /var/cache/apt/archives so use that in the command and when you do use it you will probably find a lot of space used so apt-get clean. I see you mention removing old kernels from /boot did you also remove the kernel trees form /usr/src as well and if you do not run your computer 24/7 or at the least at 6:20AM in the morning then you should install the anacron package so your logs will get rotated and deleted.

thanks, the apt-get clean cleared up a lot more free space. yes, it looks like when i got rid of the older kernels i must of cleaned them out of /usr/src as the only ones listed there are the current kernel.

just installed anacron as i do keep this box up 24/7
