HELP, corrupted tar tape

Help Help,

I have a tar tape that contains some important data that I need. When I try to extract the tape I get:

tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

The tape is a DAT 12/24. The error occurs after about 9.3gb of data. I am sure that the data got written to the tape as there where no errors when I wrote it. I dont think the tape is running out as only 9.3gb has been extracted and the tape has an uncompressed capacity of 12gb.

I have tried an extraction with the --ignore-failed-read switch set but this did not work.

I would like to find a way of skipping the damaged file in the archive and get the ones after it.

Thanks for any help

Additional Question:

How can I stream the contence of the tape into a file on the hard drive? dd returns a Cannot allocate memory error.

I have found a tar repair aplication but it only runs under windows (?) and only on files on a hard drive.
