HD crash raid howto rescue

I have a RH 7.1 system with a 3 SCSI drive software raid 5 and sda crashed.
I am now unable to boot.
When I try to boot:
The last message it get is...
"kernel panic: VFS Unable to mount root fs on 9:02
The howto says replace the bad disk and reboot, that doesn't work.
The reason I use raid is to prevent this very problem.
How do I recover my system.
