Having trouble restoring data frommaking a bad mistake.......

Okay so I was getting rid of linux cause i wanted to dual boot XP and windows 7 because i was just tired of ubunutu 10.10. Though i was foolish to use windows to delete my ubuntu partition i remember reading that i have to change mbr to windows through command prompt to get it running windows only again and then delete the partition with ubuntu liveCD but i was not thinking i guess. Of course i rebooted and what do i get a Grub rescue> screen. Of course i backed up my data but it was after i deleted ubuntu. Anyways I decided to delete the whole drive and even after that it came to a grub rescue> screen. I mangaged to get mbr and reinstalled and am now using windows 7 successfully. But my Data is important i run nero imagedisc and i tried restoring the drive i backed up but it just shutsdown in the middle of it of course i made a another CD insace that one is messed up. Though i don't want to try restoring that drive after thinking about the menu boot record. We it be alright to extract the files from my backup using nero instead of restoring the drive? I just need to make sure it won't restore and then give me another grub >rescue menu. I greatly appreciate all the help i know i am a noob lol but i am proud of myself for getting as far as i did.
