Having some trouble reinstalling lilo

After reinstalling slack, I found much to my dismay that I had made a mistake putting the scsi emulation for my cdrw into the lilo config file (hdc where it should be hdb).

I have now gotten as far as altering the /etc/lilo.conf file to use hdb instead of hdc and using the lilo command to both uninstall the existing boot loader and install my new one. However, after rebooting it seems that the old configuration still remains (output of dmesg shows hdc=ide-scsi). I have also tried using the liloconfig tool, with the same lack of results.

By the way, the boot loader is installed into the root partition, not the MBR. How can I purge that old config and install my new one??

You need to run lilo at a command prompt after you make any changes to lilo for them to take affect. You can also get some help at man lilo.conf

Hope this helps

Yep, already tried using the lilo command several times and with several options, nothing seems to work. Every time I restart my system, nothing has changed. Anybody have some ideas?

Hi Cav - personally I'd put your bootloader in the MBR rather than a partition - if you want to try this ? -

Open lilo.conf as root user from the command line

root password

gedit /etc/lilo.conf

Look for the line near the top that says

change it to ;

then click on save

Then as root user again fron the comand line run

This will now install LILO to the MBR.
