Has anyone wanted to build a kick a$$ game engine for linux (only)
I have done some thinking... (key word 'some').
My thoughts were that if a bunch of us geeks built an awesome game engine that rivaled some of the more popular game engines out there for the windows world we could possibly turn the tables some. Of course the game would have to be a really good game.
Excuse me for being ignorant - because I'm prolly just unaware... but why hasn't a really good 3d game been made for linux? I know there isn't any money in it so what's the point is a valid argument... but I somewhat disagree do to the fact that many of you brilliant people spend a lot of time programming software with no money behind it. You do it for the love of the challenge of for personal reasons.
Are there any groups that have attempted to turn the gaming world on its ear?
Also....
Has anyone thought about creating a linux-type OS that could be booted from a CD and play ANY Xbox, Playstation, Wii, etc. game on the planet? Or is that a legality issue?
Just some food for thought - please correct my ignorance in regards to this.
Since you can make the OS bootable from CD's (ie: Ubuntu among many others) you could make CD's with the OS and game on there so anyone with a compatible system could play 'em.... question is how to save a game?
I think you've made somewhat of an error in your judgment as to exactly what Linux is. Linux (and open source in general) is about the development of ideas, and to share those ideas for the betterment of society. Leave the "it's mine, all mine, you can't have it!" idealism for the proprietary companies to fight over.
Thank you for the link - that is rather interesting. Never heard of it - like a lot of things I find on here.
You will have to forgive me. My intent was not to make it proprietary - although it inherently is. My intent was to give linux something that windows didn't have. Something to give teen and young male adults a reason to use linux instead of windows.
I've been trying to convince some of my friends for a couple of years that linux is just as good (and likely better in many aspects) as windows but I can't get any bites. Perhaps this is what makes linux what it is. A niche market - somewhat in the shadows, used by only a small percentage of people. I suppose if it was as huge as windows that would turn it into something dirty and money grubbing.
