I'm trying to install RH7.1 on an older Gateway for testing purposes. As I begin to run the install, I get to the screen where X-server is loaded...it loads successfully then the screen goes black for a quick second and I get the following error.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gdk ERROR **:Fatal IO
error 104 (Connection Reset by Peer) on X Server :1
install exited abnormally
then as the machine boots down, I noticed the following
/mnt/runtime
/mnt/source umount failed <-------is this cause by the error above
/dev/pts
/proc
If anybody has any suggestions, please let me know
i remember installing rh71/72 on gateway 1150 and have some similar problems, but then got it working, so need to check on Xconfigurator
and do some playing around
No the card is incompatible with the version of X (and the way they have it configured) of the RH 7.1 LOADER. That's it. I had the same thing happen with my Gateway and 7.0. Its probably an ATI Mach64 onboard VGA card, which Gateway used a lot, that works fine with X, it just doesn't use the normal SVGA server that RH's installer tries to load. There are a couple ways to take card of this:
1) get a newer RH, after they started using XFree 4.x.x: 7.2 should cut it, almost definately 7.3.
2) use a different distro entirely as RH tends to run clumpy on older gear.
3) text mode install, X will probably configure just fine and should be the last step, although make sure to have the horiz and vert sync info on your monitor handy.
yes but its still tricky in rh73, you should test your config, let it choose hardware for you and check skip test to finish installing, then run Xconfigurator and it will run fine
