A couple of thoughts, are you using AutoFS? Have you tried configuring KDE, Control center > Desktop > Behavior > Device Icons tab.
Good luck. ;-)

Try purging AutoFS, just to be sure it's not conflicting.
Good luck.

I just meant to uninstall it and make sure any config files are uninstalled with it.
Good luck. ;-)

Did you reboot or at least restart the dbus and hal services after uninstalling? Believe me I understand your frustration, I've had a few days like these myself. I'd go back to the start of the Hal wiki, now that autofs is uninstalled and start at step one, rechecking each step if I were you. You've made so many changes trying to get this working that something could've been overlooked.
Good luck. ;-)

As I posted earlier, I'd go back to step 1 of the Hal wiki and reckeck every step one at a time carefully.
Good luck. ;-)

You're welcome, glad you got things working, albeit not exactly what you were looking for but, working just the same. There is always more than one way to skin a cat! ;-)
Good luck. ;-)
