gzip problems in Debian Sarge

I've been using fedora core 2 for a year, and switched to debian sarge a couple days ago.
I love apt-get and all, but I've been problems with gzip.

When decompressing tar.gz files that worked well in fc2, and new tar.gz files from the web,
I get this error:

/tmp$ tar xzf foo.tar.gz

gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

I get the same message with gzip too.

/tmp$ gzip -d foo.tar.gz
gzip: foo.tar.gz: not in gzip format

I tried searching the web a bit, but it seems noone else is having this problem.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on? ;(

try this command..
and see what file type it is..

Seems I found the problem was just a tar file with a .gz extention... if so, then just tar -xfv
