Thumbs up GUI improvements

Hey, I just have a couple questions about beautifying X. From all the selections of themes and all that I have seen on other boards, it looks like you can make X look pretty tight. My question is what are some things to do or suggestions, I'm used to command line, not new to linux really. First and I'm sure this is a FAQ but what to do about fonts? And various web browsing things. Sometimes, now don't flame I was just testing browser, I went to Redmond's website with the Redmond Browser. And on the front page I could see pictures and what not. While in Mozilla/Galleon/Konq/etc I could not see the pictures, it was like they weren't even meant to be rendered.
Even on linuxquestions.org's front page some text gets rendered funny. Like the Date and Time next to each news post gets unusually large and weird. Also, on Google even, when it says "you can search using the unmatched results" or whatever it says, gets rendered very large and again "odd" So i was just wondering what all I should do to spruce everything up a little. Thanks in advamce.
