Gui's

Hi All,

1) Just wondering where I can get a list of available GUI's + Screenshots.
2) Are they easy to install(i'm using vectorlinux)

Vector Linux gives me the choice of 3 when I boot, but none of them seem to look very good.

I read somewhere that the "free" version of Vector lacks the two more "beautiful" desktop environments namely KDE and Gnome...

Yeh your right it does. It's designed to be small and run quick on older machines(or so I've been told), so because of this they must have not included these because I understand they are more power demanding that the ones included.

Thanks for including the links though, I'll try them tonight and see how my machine performs

xfce is a good gui for linux. When you first install it it doesn't look that great but you can configure it to look how you want. Plus it is fast.

I agree, thats what I am using at the moment, very very quick, which is an advantage as its installed on a 550mhz machine.

How do you configure it? I've never actually figured that out

devinWhalen 12-03-2003 10:32 AM

There are tons of settings. I don't know what version you are running but I am running 4.1 and I have it configured to exactly what I want. If you are running 4.x then run xfce-setting-show from the command line. For a manual go to:http://members.home.nl/xfce4/documentation/
There should also be a help manual installed with the system and a button on the panel for it. If you are running below 4.x then I can't tell you as I only started at 4.0. But I recommend upgrading. Good luck.

I've already got fluxbox installed, so I've downloaded some themes, how do I install them?

Eventhough I'm using a Geforce graphics card and on a 1.4GHz system, I still prefer to use XFce... Eyecandy without the bloat :)

Actually the latest release version of XFce is 4.0.1 not 4.1 :)

You can also take a look at:

www.xwinman.org

Its a pretty good site for all the different window managers out there.

I untar them to ~/.fluxbox. You should end up with one or more of a ~/.fluxbox/backgrounds, ~/.fluxbox/styles, and a ~/.fluxbox/pixmaps (0.9.x only, I think) containing the theme files. You may need to edit the ~/.fluxbox/menu file, depending on how it's set up, to get them to show. If you want them generally available, I think they go in /usr/local/share/fluxbox or /usr/share/fluxbox or whatever.

IIRC I read on the Vector forums that you can install Dropline Gnome on Vector without issue.

Pretty enough for you?
