Question gsm modem

I sometimes use my siemens gsm phone (with a data cable) to connect to my isp. I was wondering if there are linux drivers which will allow me yo use this under linux. I use mandrake 8.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

I am also interested in writing my own drivers to accomplish this. Can someone give me a good starting point for this?
thanks upfront.
